VOLUNTEER Job Descriptions
Information for ABSC volunteers
updated July 2008
Volunteers: ABSC collects one $100 volunteer deposit per family, per season, and asks families to choose a volunteer job at registration each season. A minimum of 8 hours per season of volunteer work for the club entitles a volunteer to a refund of the $100 volunteer deposit. Examples of valuable and necessary jobs:
ABSC board positions The board meets first Tuesdays of the month from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Blue Barn Clubhouse at 4th & Harrison, next to the Berkeley Skate Park. We welcome any interested parent. At the moment the club needs board members in the positions of: Assistant Treasurer, Community Outreach, and Fundraising/Development.
Assistant Coach One or two assistant coaches per team support the head coach at practices and games throughout the season and fill in for the coach as necessary.
Coach Our coaches support positive coaching values, provide the opportunity for improvement of skills for kids of varied ability on their team, encourage good sportsmanship, fun and a love of the game. Most volunteer coaches are parents. Some knowledge of club and league policy regarding positive coaching is required. Club manager Steven Morrison provides orientation, coach clinics, coaching materials, support and advice: 510-229-0721, abscmanager@yahoo.com
Clerical/Odd Jobs Assistant Many detail-oriented volunteers support club staff and board members by helping to set up for clinics, making deliveries, filing, joining paperwork parties, doing data entry at your home computer, making follow-up calls to coaches and tryouts participants or compiling data.
Equipment Distribution and Returns Several volunteers assist at the beginning and end of each season with the disbursal and collection of soccer equipment (balls, cones, pinnies, goalie jerseys and gloves) at the Blue Barn Clubhouse.
Field Crew Volunteers help by either drawing the boundary lines on a field weekly or biweekly, or by setting up and taking down the goals and nets before the first game and after the last game.
Field Host (formerly called Field Marshal) This is a great way to get 4 hours of volunteer work. A field host is the club s supervisor at Saturday games. They encourage teams to start games on time, with the help of the referee clear the field on time for the following game, provide basic information about the field (contained on their clipboard), write down questions and complaints to be passed on to ABSC, and mail in a score sheet at the end of their shift game). No special soccer skills or soccer knowledge are necessary to do this job.
Referee Adults and children 14 and older serve as referees for the Saturday and tournament matches. Referees have attended licensing courses (at no cost to ABSC members) and passed a test on the rules of the game. This is a paid volunteer job, plus refereeing a minimum of 5 games per season qualifies for one free ABSC registration for one player.
Registration Assistant Numerous detail-oriented volunteers are needed at the walk-in registration sessions and afterwards at paperwork parties.
Spanish Translator Bilingual volunteers assist in translating materials for our website and mailings into Spanish. We hope to establish a Spanish telephone tree.
Team Manager A team manager communicates with team parents by email or phone to inform them of game schedules and practices, forwards messages from the coach, establishes a snack schedule for parent participation and organizes end-of-season parties and awards.
