COMPETITIVE SOCCER

Division I and Division III Team Formation Information

Division III
teams are for soccer players in the "Under 12" and older age groups who want a more serious level of play than in the Recreational Division IV, and play against other teams in District IV. Teams are formed in the same 2-year age groups as the Recreational Division IV teams, although some teams may wish to be "age pure" (all players born in the same 12-month period).

Division I
teams are highly competitive and play against teams from District III and District IV. Teams are generally age pure (all players are born in the same 12-month period).

Requirements

Players must attend at least one tryout to be eligible  to be invited to join any Division I or Division III team. Players must bring a white t-shirt (no team jerseys allowed), shin guards, soccer shoes, a soccer ball (with name on it) and water.

Evaluation Information
During the tryouts players can expect to be involved in small-sided games, simple drills and larger, full-field scrimmages. ACCYSL player evaluators assess player aptitude based on a whole range of skills including first touch, shooting, passing, drib
bling, taking chances, ability to read the game, overall impact, etc.

Evaluators make recommendations to the Division 1 and Division 3 Coaches as to whether players are best suited to be playing at Division 1 level, Division 3 level, or Recreational level.

Team Assignment
Coaches invite qualified players to join their team. Invitations are extended taking each player's team and coach "preference" into account. The minimum amount of players per team is 11, with a maximum of 18 total players, for both Division I and Division III teams. Coaches are required to select a minimum of 10 players per team at the time of tryouts, with additional qualified players assigned as necessary. Note that each club may have a different method for evaluating players.

Assignment Details
Please be aware that players are assigned to teams based on skill level, not solely by preference for club or team. It is possible
that players will be assigned to different clubs, coaches and/or teams than those they have played with before, or the team/coach they selected by preference; a player could receive invitations from more than one team. This can result in a team made up of players from a combination of clubs and teams.

Assignments are made primarily to ensure that teams are balanced, and to secure an adequate number of qualified players for each team. Note that even if a qualified player is selected for a Division III or Division I team, he or she may elect to remain with a Division IV team; it is not mandatory to accept an invitation.

Team Notification
Player invitation to Division III teams will be completed by the end of March for U12 and U14 age divisions. [Note that the older age divisions (U15 thru U19) will have tryouts in April.] If a player has not been notified by this date, please contact Division III Registrar,
Karen Steinmeyer
ksteinmeyer@alumni.ucsd.edu, 510-558-0634 . Division III teams are being formed by several ACCYSL clubs. For additional information, go to www.accysl.org.

Division I (Mavericks) players should contact Mavericks Registrar.  See
www.eteamz.com/ACCYSLMavericks or www.maverickssoccer.org.

Good luck, and enjoy the game!
